The Orgins of Fonts - OLDSTYLE

Time: The Renaissance (1400-1500)
Name of type: OLDSTYLE






OldStyle originated from calligraphy - so typographers spent endless time making the type look "pretty". They would carve wood blocks or metal ornaments for each letter:




















You will notice greater stroke contrast and more wedge shaped serifs.
